Territorial expansion means expanding the land or territory you own or rule. Trading opportunities can grow because of Territorial expansion. Territorial expansion is connected to the story of Greece and Persian Wars. This was connected because if the Greeks had control of the areas next to the sea then they would control a lot and most of the Mediterranean Sea, this was one of the reasons Greece and Persia had gone through many battles. You see the Persians wanted to expand their Territory and since Persia was on the east of Greece they attacked Greece. There were 6 events that occurred during the battle for Greece’s land. The first event was Ionians, next was First invasion of Greece, Third was battle of Marathon, fourth was Second invasion of Greece, fifth was battle of Thermopylae, and last but not least Battle of Salamis.
The Ionians were Greek people who lived along the coast of Turkey. The Persians invaded the Ionians first; Ionians were to weak so they decided to call other Greek cities to help them get their revenge. The other Greek cities brought many types of weapons and things that might help such as: Ships. However they were defeated. The Persians didn’t like the fact that the Greeks were fighting back so they decided to take over all of Greece.

The Athens army killed 6,000 Persians and they lost 192 Greeks. To make sure the Persians would come the people of Athens 25 Miles back to Athens, This was when the marathon race was created. It influences us today because today we have a wild range of Marathon races in which people attend.
The Second Invasion of Greece, After the battle of Marathon (10 years later) Kind Darius I’s son (King Xerxes) wanted revenge so he gathered an army of over 200,000 men and 1,000 warships.
The battle of Thermopylae: Greeks created a small force, which was led by a Spartan king named King Leonidas I, and 300 Spartans. They met the Persians in a narrow pass of Mountain Thermopylae. The Greeks held of the Persians killing thousands, but the Persians found a way around the mountain and hid behind the Greeks. The king told the troops to flee but the Spartans stayed behind killing as much Persians as they could.
The battle of Salamis was the last battle: Persians continued to invade Greece, however when they went to Athens it was deserted this was because the people Athens ran away, but the Athenian fleet was waiting off the coast of the island Salamis. Persians were sure of winning. Athenian fleets were very fast and the Athenian ships sunk the Persian ships and the Persians were defeated.
